Election Day 2026: What AANM Members Need to Know
The November General Election is approaching, and now is a good time for AANM members and New Mexicans statewide to make sure they are ready to participate.
National Voter Registration Day was Tuesday, September 15, a nationwide, nonpartisan effort encouraging eligible voters to register, check their registration status, and make sure their information is current. This year, the New Mexico Secretary of State's Office encouraged New Mexicans to use the occasion as a reminder to verify their voter information ahead of the 2026 General Election.
The 2026 General Election is Tuesday, November 3
New Mexico's regular voter registration period for the 2026 General Election closes Tuesday, October 6, 2026. This is 28 days before Election Day.
However, October 6 is not the final opportunity for an eligible New Mexican to register and vote in the General Election.
New Mexico offers Same-Day Voter Registration (SDR), which allows eligible voters to register for the first time or update their existing voter registration and vote during the Early Voting period and on Election Day. Same-Day Registration is available at County Clerks' offices, participating Early Voting locations, and polling locations on Election Day.
Voters using Same-Day Registration should review the identification requirements and participating locations before going to vote. Information is available through the New Mexico Secretary of State and individual County Clerks.
Check Your Voter Registration
Even if you are already registered, take a few minutes to confirm that your name, address, and other voter information are correct.
Keeping your address current matters because your registered address determines the districts and ballot contests that apply to you, including legislative and other district-specific offices and ballot questions.
Through the New Mexico Secretary of State's NMVOTE portal, voters can:
- Register to vote online
- Check or update voter registration information
- Request an absentee ballot
- Sign up for the Permanent Absentee List
- View a sample ballot for the upcoming election
- Find County Clerk information
- Find voting locations and other election resources
Checking your information ahead of time is one of the easiest ways to make sure you are prepared to participate.
What's on the Ballot in 2026?
The 2026 General Election includes federal, statewide, legislative, judicial, district, and county offices.
Statewide and federal contests include elections for:
- U.S. Senator
- U.S. Representative
- Governor
- Lieutenant Governor
- Secretary of State
- Attorney General
- State Auditor
- State Treasurer
- Commissioner of Public Lands
All 70 seats in the New Mexico House of Representatives are also up for election in 2026. In addition, voters in certain districts will see other contests, including judicial, Public Education Commission, county, and other district-specific offices.
County-level races vary depending on where you live and can include positions such as County Commissioner, County Assessor, County Sheriff, County Probate Judge, County Clerk, County Treasurer, and Magistrate Court positions, depending on the county and election cycle.
Because New Mexico's 33 counties and numerous legislative, congressional, judicial, and other districts have different contests, no single ballot applies to every AANM member.

Why Elections Matter to New Mexico's Rental Housing Industry
As a statewide organization, AANM represents members who own, operate, manage, develop, and serve rental housing communities throughout New Mexico. Decisions made by elected officials at every level of government can directly affect our industry and the communities our members serve.
Federal, state, and local policymakers make decisions involving issues such as housing development, landlord-tenant law, property taxation, land use and zoning, infrastructure, building and safety requirements, housing supply, economic development, housing affordability, and the overall cost of providing rental housing.
For AANM, being engaged in the public policy process is an important part of representing New Mexico's rental housing industry. We work year-round to keep members informed about legislative and regulatory developments and to provide policymakers with information on how proposed policies may affect rental housing providers, residents, and communities across our state.
Civic participation begins with being informed. Regardless of individual political views, we encourage our members to learn about the candidates and issues on their ballots, understand how public policy can affect their businesses and communities, and make their own informed decisions at the ballot box.
Important 2026 Election Dates
October 6, 2026
Regular voter registration closes, and Early Voting begins at County Clerks' offices.
October 17, 2026
Additional Early Voting locations begin opening across New Mexico.
October 31, 2026
Early Voting ends.
November 3, 2026
General Election Day
Remember: Eligible voters who miss the regular registration period may still be able to register or update their registration and vote through Same-Day Voter Registration during Early Voting or on Election Day.
